Happy Birthday The Transporter
A Middlesbrough & Teesside Icon
1911 - 2011
Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge is 100 years old today. Towering over the River Tees, it stands as true Teesside icon and proudly represents Teesside's industrial heritage.
A Grade II listed building, the bridge was designed by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company and officially opened on 17 October 1911 by Prince Arthur of Connaught.
In it's time, The Transporter Bridge has seen its fair share of fame - most famously featuring in the return series of Auf Wiedersehn, Pet, in which the storyline had it sold, dismantled and sent to Arizona! It also appeared on the front cover of the 1998 single 'High' by The Lighthouse Family, and in a number of films and TV shows (including Billy Elliot & The Fast Show).
In the 70's, TV comdian Terry Scott (of Terry and June fame) famously drove right off the edge after paying his toll, mistakingly believing it was a standard toll bridge. Luckily for him, The Transporter had it's safety nets in place to account for stupid southerners who couldn't quite grasp the concept!
For 100 years, The Transporter has been ferrying people from one side of The Tees to the other and today is looked on with great pride and fondness by people all over Teesside. It is a true icon and will hopefully remain so for the next 100 years!
Happy Birthday The Transporter Bridge!
